Openreach extends proof of concept trial nationwide

BT's local network division Openreach has announced a number of changes to its proof of concept trial, launched on 09 July. As of 12 September, notification will sent without prior validation from the Police or Openreach, which is expected to reduce the notification timescales from up to 4 hours down to 15 minutes in most cases. In addition the trial will be extended nationwide 24/7, and run until 30 November. The trial is designed to proactively notify broadband ISPs and phone operators about Major Service Outage's (MSO) on the BT network.

 

UK unbundled lines reach 8.48 million at end-August

The number of unbundled lines in the UK reached 8.48 million at end-August, according to the latest data from the Office of the Telecommunications Adjudicator. The number of WLR lines reached 6.29 million, with the number of phone numbers using CPS reaching 2.34 million.

 

BT to raise UK phone line rental, call prices from 2013

BT has confirmed that its standard UK phone line rental and call charges will go up next year once its current price freeze ends, Recombu.com reported. BT announced in August 2011 that its prices would remain frozen until 2013. Its standard line rental will now go higher to GBP 15.45 per month from 14.60, with its daytime UK call rates rising to 8.41 pence per minute from 7.95 and its evening UK call rates to 1.11 pence per minute from 1.05. Meanwhile, the call connection fee will increase to 13.87 pence from 13.1. Most of the changes represent an increase of around 6 percent. The new prices will take effect from 5 January 2013.

 

Openreach hires more engineers for fibre broadband roll-out

BT's local network division Openreach has announced plans to hire 400 new engineers, bringing the total number of new engineers hired in 2012 to over 1,000. This follows the recruitment of around 600 in first-half 2012. The extra engineers will join a mobile workforce supporting the roll-out of fibre broadband across the UK. They will not be confined to one geography but will instead work where the demand for fibre broadband connectivity is the greatest.
